Both Lumen and Fitbit offer high-tech devices to help consumers reach their workout goals by promoting a healthy lifestyle and through information tracked and put into their app. Each device will then provide users advice about changes they should make to stay on track for their goals.
The main difference is that Lumen tracks user’s metrics by having them breathe into the device while Fitbit tracks users through monitors on its smartwatches.

While Lumen and Fitbit both boast that they’re going to help you get into better shape, the companies’ products have a very different approach in how they help you achieve your fitness goals.
The Lumen is a device that focuses on teaching you about metabolic health. Their tagline is that they’ll be able to “hack” your metabolism. So how does that work?
The device aims to teach you about how your body reacts to your current routine. You breathe into the Lumen (which looks almost like a Vape pen for anyone who isn’t paying close attention), and then the Bluetooth-connected device will measure the CO2 concentration in your breath. From there, the device will tell you through an app on your phone if you’re currently burning fat or carbs.
In this way, the device doesn’t tell you how often you should be working out or what you should be eating, but instead, it lets you know how your body is reacting to the decisions you’re making.
Since everyone’s body reacts to what they eat or how they work out differently, this could be invaluable information if you’ve tried to lose weight in the past but haven’t cracked the code yet for what works best for you.
Think Lumen sounds like a good fit?
The Fitbit line takes on a significantly different approach to leading its customers to live a healthier kind of lifestyle. Fitbit offers smartwatches that tell you everything about your exercise portfolio from how many steps you get a day, to what your heart rate is, to how much you’re sleeping at night. For some of Fitbit’s newer watches, the line is even advertising that the devices can detect your stress levels at different points throughout the day.
On top of the watch’s tracking ability, Fitbit also allows you to purchase a premium plan that integrates into the app that users already have to check up on their watch stats. The premium subscription offers advanced insights into the information your Fitbit has picked up, along with providing guided workout programs and games and challenges across the Fitbit community.
On top of the physical activities that they track, the Fitbit watch line offers other “smart” items. Most of the newer Fitbit watches allow you to upload music onto the watch, which you can play as you work out. You can also receive notifications from calls, texts, or emails on the device.
Some of the newest models, like the Fitbit Sense, even allow you to set up a voice assistant (Fitbit allows for you to choose from Google or Alexa).
Lumen’s Metabolism Tracking vs. FitBit’s Fitness Tracking
While both Lumen and Fitbit boast that their tracking systems will help you achieve your workout goals, they go about helping you achieve these goals in extremely different ways.
The Lumen metabolism tracking allows for you to see how your metabolism reacts to your decisions in how you workout through breathing into it by determining your CO2 levels. One of the major complaints on the Lumen focuses on how accurate the Lumen actually is. Some reviews and studies claim that the Lumen is highly accurate while other people who have reviewed it claim that it will push you towards a low carb diet regardless of the information you input.
The Fitbit fitness tracking line is different from the Lumen because Fitbit gives you tips and advice on the kinds of workouts you should do based on the information you put into the app. Most of this information comes from you manually in the beginning, and then the Fitbit app can adjust based on the activity that your watch picks up.
Tips for Deciding if Lumen or FitBit is Better for You (Should You Get Both?)
The Lumen and the Fitbit line are so different that it truly depends on your personalized workout goals for if you should buy one of them (or both of them).
For the Lumen, if you want to reap all of the benefits that the device can provide, then you’ll need to be prepared to mix the Lumen into your daily routine. To find the best results for your metabolic rate, the app suggests that you breathe into it first thing in the morning before you eat breakfast. It also suggests that you breathe into it 30 minutes before and after each workout (this is so the app can create a baseline for your CO2 levels and see how your workout affected you).
Fitbit doesn’t require you to remember to input your information for you to get a reading on how your body is reacting to the choices you’re making in your everyday life. Instead, the smartwatch will automatically pick up on your activities.
If you’re someone who has tried a bunch of different diets or workout programs but have never seen the results you’ve wanted, then it could be worth it to give the Lumen a try. If you follow the regime, it could give you insight into what’s working for you in a way that no other program has before. Suppose you’re someone who isn’t going to follow the routine of religiously inputting your information at the right time everyday. In that case, you’re better off choosing a Fitbit smartwatch as your workout companion.
However, suppose you’re a person who wants the best opportunity to see results and want your physical activity to be directly tied into the dietary choices that you’re making. In that case, you should consider buying both devices. Only then will you truly be able to know how your diet is affecting your body in conjunction with your workouts.
Price Head-toHead: Is Lumen or Fitbit Cheaper?
Typically the Lumen runs for a retail price of $349, but Lumen is also running a lot of sales at different points of the year to promote its product, and I’ve seen the price drop as low as $249.
Fitbit offers a wide range of products, so you can buy some of their smartwatches for far less than the Lumen costs. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a Fitbit product that costs more than the Lumen’s retail price, though; the Fitbit’s newest model, the Fitbit sense, is retailing at $329. You could buy a Fitbit watch that offers many of the same features as the sense for as low as $179 (the Versa 2)
Summary: Should You Buy Lumen or Fitbit?
Both Lumen and Fitbit offer many features that can help you reach your fitness goals; Lumen does it by offering you information on your metabolic rate while Fitbit offers you information on, well, pretty much everything else.
Based on the price of the Lumen, along with the wider range of features that Fitbit offers, Fitbit would be my choice for picking out a fitness device. Its heart rate tracking, along with specific workout plans, are hard to beat. I’d only choose the Lumen over Fitbit if you’ve tried to use smartwatches as a way to reach your goals in the past, and you haven’t had a good experience or if you’re someone who wants to incorporate a more stringent diet plan into your workout programs.
That said, they both have something to offer when it comes to tracking your health, so there’s no reason you couldn’t give both a try.
