Craig Stephens, Chair
Associate Professor of Biology

Craig Stephens is Chair of the Santa Clara University Biology Department. He has been on the SCU faculty for ten years, during which time he founded and served as Director of the undergraduate Biotechnology program, and helped organize a new interdisciplinary Bioengineering program. He has been involved in judging for the Health category of the Tech Awards since the awards began. Prior to coming to SCU, Craig was a postdoctoral research fellow in Developmental Biology at Stanford University. He received his B.S. degree in Biology form Roanoke College in 1985, and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Virginia in 1991. He teaches courses in microbiology, cellular and molecular biology, and biotechnology at SCU. His research interests are in the genetics and physiology of microorganisms. He has been awarded research grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, has published in numerous professional journals, and is currently working on a microbiology textbook for undergraduate students.
Marie Barry

Marie Barry is formerly the Director of International Business at The ALZA Corporation (a Johnson and Johnson company) located in Mountain View. She joined the company in 1972 and has served in various marketing and business development positions prior to her recent retirement. She now serves as a consultant to pharmaceutical companies in the Valley and to the Zaffaroni Foundation. Marie also is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Medical Marketing Association. Community involvement has included board and volunteer positions with Mid-peninsula Homecare and Hospice and the Junior League of the Midpeninsula. Presently, she serves as a member of the Board of Regents at Santa Clara University and as the past president of the national Alumni Association.
Steve Eglash

Steve is President and CEO of Cyrium Technologies, a solar energy startup company developing high-efficiency solar cells for concentrator photovoltaic applications. Previously, he was a venture capitalist at Worldview Technology Partners where he emphasized investments in semiconductors, displays, lighting, and energy. Steve was also Vice President at SDL (JDSU) where he managed efforts in telecommunications, printing, optical amplifiers, and industrial lasers. He began his career as a research scientist at MIT Lincoln Laboratory.
Steve recently completed a special assignment with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy where he led a solar energy strategic planning project. Steve is a frequent speaker at conferences such as the Photonics Market Opportunities Forum at SPIE's Photonics West. He is the two-time chairman of the OSA's Executive Forum at the Optical Fiber Conference. Steve is also involved in humanitarian projects such as the Tech Museum Awards for Technology Benefiting Humanity and the Global Social Benefit Incubator at Santa Clara University.
Steve received a Ph.D. and M.S. from Stanford University and a B.S. from the University of California at Berkeley, all in Electrical Engineering.
Leilani Miller

Leilani Miller is an Associate Professor of Biology and former Clare Booth Luce Assistant Professor of Biology at Santa Clara University. She joined the University in 1994 after finishing her post-doctoral work in the Department of Developmental Biology at Stanford University Medical Center. Prior to that, she earned a Ph.D. in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.S. in Biology (Honors Program) from Stanford University. Leilani teaches courses in Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Biotech Ethics, and her research focus is in Developmental Biology. In particular, she studies the mechanisms by which cells in a growing organism assume the different cell fates required for a variety of specialized functions. She has published articles in Cell, Genes and Development, and Genetics.
Russ M. Sampson

From 1998 to 2004, Russel Sampson was the Vice President of Research & Development for Novacept, Inc, a privately held med-tech firm in Palo Alto focused on women's health. The company's flagship product is an RF electrosurgical system used in the treatment of menorrhagia. In March, 2004 Novacept was acquired by Cytyc Corporation, a Massachusetts based company focused on cytology for women's health. Since that time, he has served as the Vice President of Research & Development for Cytyc Surgical Products, a newly formed division of Cytyc Corporation. From 1996 to 1998, he served in various engineering and management positions within Novacept's R&D group. Prior to joining Novacept, he was engaged in the development of electromechanical drug delivery systems for the Hospital Products Division of Abbott laboratories from 1991 to 1996, first as an R&D Engineer, then as a Member of Technical Staff. Abbott HPD developed hospital based systems with applications in the medical-surgical, ICU and coronary care units. >From 1986 to 1991 Russel was an R&D Engineer in the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory of Space Systems/Loral, an astronautics company engaged in the development of geosynchronous communication and weather satellites. Within the Solar Array Subsystems group of the ME Laboratory, he was involved in the design and development of mechanisms used to deploy satellites' antennas and solar panels once the satellites achieved orbit. He received his BS in Applied Mechanics and Engineering Sciences from the University of California, San Diego and is a licensed Professional Engineer. He holds 12 issued US patents and several international patents, with additional US and international patents pending.

Jonathan Showstack, PhD, MPH, is a Professor of Medicine and Health Policy in the Institute for Health Policy Studies and Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He also is an Associate Director of the Institute. He has a doctorate in sociology from the University of California, San Francisco and a Masters in health administrating and planning from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on technology assessment, factors associated with the costs and outcomes of medical care, strategic planning in health care organizations and the impact of policies related to undergraduate and graduate health professions education. Jonathan has studied the changing use of hospital services over a ten year period for a selected set of diagnoses; the association of volume with outcome for coronary artery bypass surgery performed in California; the costs of kidney and liver transplantation; the costs of treatment of infertility; and factors associated with prenatal outcomes, including insurance status and amount of prenatal care.
Peter Sullivan

Peter Wm. Sullivan, graduated with a B.E.E., cum laude in 1966 from Santa Clara University, graduated from Stanford University with an M.S.E.E. in 1967 and received his MD at the University of California, San Francisco in 1971. He took on an Internship at San Francisco General and became a Pediatric Resident and Immunology Fellow at UCMCSF, San Francisco from 1972 through 1977. During the years from 1977 up until 1996, he worked as a Clinical Instructor of Pediatric Immunology and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at UCMCSF. Part of those years were spent as a Chairman and Medical Director of the Utilization Review Board at SFGH and Medical Director of Emergency Services at CPMC (California Campus Formerly Children's Hospital, SF). He also worked in the Military as an Assistant Surgeon for the National Cancer Institute in NIH in Bethesda, Maryland from 1973 to 1975. One of the many Honors Peter has received is a nomination for the Mayor's Managerial Excellence Award in 1983. His affiliations include but are not limited to a Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Fellowship, a Board Membership with the San Francisco IPA and a Provider of Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Peter currently serves as the Vice-Chairman and Assistant Medical Director of the Department of Emergency Medicine at CPMC and has since 1992. He also is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a member of the Utilization Management at CPMG and BTMG, a member and fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, a Board Member of San Francisco Emergency Physicians and a member and officer of the SFMS Executive Committee. His presentations include "Faculty, Practical Office Surgery, Basic and Advanced Workshops in the Fall Session at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Meeting in 1983, "Faculty, Office Surgery Workshops, in the Spring Session at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Meeting in 1987 and "Aids in the Emergency Department" at The Fischer-Mangold Directors" Conference in 1987.
